# Qualify the second source before you need it

Build a usable contingency path without displacing a trusted incumbent.

A second supplier is not a contingency plan until the product, service model, and ordering path have been tested.

## Move the work out of the disruption window

Waiting for a disruption to begin qualification can compress specification, sample, commercial, and operational review into an urgent decision.

Qualifying early gives teams time to compare evidence, resolve gaps, and agree exactly when the alternative route should be used.

## Build an executable option

A usable second-source plan should confirm:

- Specification alignment
- Samples and application testing
- Quality and documentation requirements
- Ordering route and commercial terms
- Replenishment and communication process
- When and how the contingency would be activated

## Protect the existing operating model

Second-source qualification does not have to displace a trusted incumbent. It can create an approved option that procurement and operations activate only when conditions require it.

The commercial route—direct, distributor, or hybrid—should be designed around volume, replenishment, consolidation, and service needs.
