# A packaging trial needs a scorecard

Agree what success means before samples reach the line, store, or operation.

Samples can look right in a meeting and still fail in the real operation. The difference is usually whether the trial tested the full journey—or only the product on a desk.

## Define the decision before the test

A useful trial begins with a written decision: what is changing, what stays fixed, which risks matter, and who has authority to approve the result.

Procurement, quality, operations, logistics, and end users may each see a different failure mode. A shared scorecard brings those requirements into one controlled review.

## Test the complete operating journey

Build the trial around the conditions the finished pack will actually encounter.

- Fit with the product and equipment
- Strength through filling, handling, and transport
- Sealing, closure, or dispenser performance
- Storage, bundle, case, pallet, and pack-out requirements
- Presentation at the point of use
- Feedback from operations and end users

## Record evidence, not impressions

Use clear pass/fail criteria wherever possible. Capture observations, exceptions, photographs, and owners for corrective actions so the final decision does not depend on memory.

If the sample fails, the scorecard should help identify whether the issue sits with the specification, application, equipment, process, or test setup.
